A South Australian upper house MP plans to introduce her third bill in under two years to restrict late-term abortions, but local GPs have an advocacy plan of their own.
Upper House MP Sarah Game, formerly of One Nation, wants to ban abortions after 25 weeks unless necessary to save the mother’s life.
SA-based sexual health GP Dr Clare Keogh warned The Medical Republic the proposal may deter vulnerable patients from seeking care.
Less than a year after a move to restrict abortion access was narrowly defeated in South Australia, a similar bill is set to be introduced to parliament.

For the second time in 12 months, South Australia’s GP community has come out against proposed restrictions on abortion in the state.
In October last year, SA’s upper house voted down a bill from Liberal MP Ben Hood which would have forced women seeking a termination of pregnancy after 28 weeks to undergo an induced birth and deliver their baby alive.

South Australian GPs are speaking out against new proposed restrictions on abortion access. It comes following independent MP and former One Nation member, Sarah Game, planning to introduce a bill on Friday limiting access to abortion after 23 weeks.
RACGP South Australia Chair, Dr Siân Goodson, said that decisions on abortion should be made by patients in consultation with healthcare professionals. “Abortion services are essential healthcare, and we strongly oppose these plans,” she said.
