Abortion Rights in Canada are Under Attack

Forced-birth groups are testing their strategy

Dr. Jen Gunter

My friends in Canada, and anyone else who cares about human rights and not descending into fascism, The National Post sounded a right-wing dog whistle about abortion, and you need to pay attention. We have lived this in the United States, and trust me when I tell you, this is how it starts.

The cause for alarm? The National Post, a right-wing national rag, ran a piece featuring an undercover forced birther allegedly visiting four clinics, claiming she was 22 weeks pregnant and trying to arrange an abortion. The videos were highly edited and apparently filmed two years ago, when the person who made them claimed to have been pregnant. I make no excuses for not taking the word of someone who shoots clandestine videos about abortion. When someone publicly admits to misleading multiple people, their word is meaningless.

Why Doctors Are Opting Out of Arkansas

The state’s abortion ban impedes recruitment and compounds physician workloads

By Caroline McCoy

Over ten days in February, Shannon Barringer, a certified genetic counselor practicing in Little Rock, referred three patients to medical facilities outside of Arkansas. Each woman had chosen to terminate a nonviable pregnancy, a medical procedure that would present far less risk than carrying the fetus but is no longer legal in Arkansas. Barringer had spent hours coordinating care for her patients elsewhere, ultimately sending two to Chicago and one to Boston. “I think part of me is running on automatic, trying to get these people where they need to be,” Barringer said. “But I also feel very emotionally worn out.”

Australia – Email proves Queanbeyan Hospital has banned surgical abortions, as pressure mounts on NSW health minister to intervene

Exclusive by national regional affairs reporter Lucy Barbour
Tuesday 12 November

The ABC has uncovered fresh evidence that another public hospital in regional New South Wales has implemented a formal abortion ban. Queanbeyan Hospital was providing surgical terminations for fetal anomalies and medical reasons. But an ABC investigation revealed the service stopped abruptly in August, after a woman was turned away on the day of her planned procedure.

In response to that woman's experience, health practitioners warned of an "unspoken ban". But the ABC has now obtained an email that proves the hospital has formally ceased providing the time-critical health care.

An explicit ban on abortions for non-medical reasons has been laid down by the executive of a regional New South Wales public hospital, the ABC can reveal.

USA – A leading abortion provider on why restrictive laws are taking us back to the Dark Ages

For 60 years, Dr. Warren Hern has been a leader on abortion care. Here's what drives him

By Nicole Karlis
October 13, 2024

Throughout this election cycle, the term “late-term abortion” has popped up several times, despite not being an actual medical term. Not only did the first presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump include a very misinformed discussion about “late-term abortions” before Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision, but the Republican Party adopted a “Make America Great Again” policy platform ahead of its national convention, stating in a 16-page document that the party will oppose "late-term abortion.”

An Abortion Provider Debunks Trump’s Debate Talking Points

By Andrea González-Ramírez, the Cut

One of Donald Trump’s biggest weaknesses this presidential election is his anti-abortion stance, particularly the role he played (and routinely brags about) in the overturning of Roe v. Wade. During Tuesday’s presidential debate, he attempted to neutralize that weakness by painting Democrats as the extreme party when it comes to abortion rights, repeating falsehoods about patients seeking the procedure “in the ninth month” of pregnancy and having “post-birth abortions.”

This inflammatory rhetoric hinges on voters’ unfamiliarity with abortion care later in pregnancy. Despite what 67 percent of Americans think, only a small percentage of abortions occur after 21 weeks of gestation and they become even rarer further into pregnancy. Providers say these later terminations tend to be medically complex cases that are logistically and financially challenging for many patients.

Abortions Later in Pregnancy in a Post-Dobbs Era

Ivette Gomez, Alina Salganicoff, and Laurie Sobel - KFF
Published: Feb 21, 2024

Abortions occurring at or after 21 weeks gestational age are rare. They are often difficult to obtain, as they are only available in a handful of states, performed by a small subset of abortion providers and are typically costly and time-intensive. Yet, these abortions receive a disproportionate share of attention in the news, policy and the law.

…This brief explains why individuals may seek abortions later in pregnancy, how often these procedures occur, and the various laws which regulate access to abortions later in pregnancy across the country.

Abortion laws triggered dozens of health complications, new report says

The research is an effort to capture an expansive picture of how health care has been affected by abortion bans

By Caroline Kitchener
May 16, 2023

A new report has identified dozens of examples in which medical providers say pregnant patients received care in the past year that deviated from care they would have received before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade — a sign, researchers said, of a pattern of serious health complications triggered by abortion bans.

While no nationwide data has yet emerged to show the extent of these complications, the report, being released Tuesday by researchers at the University of California at San Francisco and shared with The Washington Post, offers a first-of-its-kind summary of anonymized examples from medical providers across the country.
