Since Roe fell, a community-led network of care has grown into a nationwide system with the promise of “mife no matter what.”

In June 2022, after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and over half of states banned or restricted abortion, grassroots activists across the country organized mutual aid groups to share free abortion pills with people living in restrictive states. Today, community providers distributing free abortion pills operate in every U.S. state and territory that bans or restricts abortion.

I met Rebecca Nall last week, at the first Abortion In America convening in Austin Texas. The convening, which featured a range of experts and regular people telling their personal stories about abortions and abortion bans, was a beautiful example of community in a time when abortion care is being increasingly threatened. It was also emotionally fraught — listening to stories of people whose lives were turned upside down by the efforts they had to undertake to access reproductive care was disheartening. I was glad to be among them and hearing their stories, but I was also exhausted. After a mentally and emotionally draining day, sitting down with Rebecca Nall was like a strong cup of coffee. She didn’t seem exhausted; she seemed energized – and it reenergized me.

Nall is the founder and creator of INeedAnA.com, a website launched in 2016 that uses three pieces of information (ones that the website says wouldn't make an individual identifiable and that it doesn't store) to give people seeking abortions options for possible care.

Abortion Bans in the U.S. Created a Human Rights Crisis

With reproductive rights already stripped away in half the country, anti-abortion activists are suing the FDA to ban the abortion drug mifepristone.

The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the constitutional right to abortion created a human rights crisis in vast swaths of the country.

Twenty-four states have banned abortion or are likely to do so. Clinics in neighboring states are overwhelmed with demand for appointments. Most of the patients I care for at Trust Women clinic in Kansas describe making numerous phone calls and waiting weeks for an appointment. A few months ago, our clinic received over 16,000 phone calls for an appointment in just one day.

USA – For-Profit Abortion Telemedicine Start-Ups Are Proliferating in Wake of “Roe”

In 2020, a federal judge ruled that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must suspend its requirement that patients pick up mifepristone, one of the pills used in medication abortion, in person. After some back-and-forth under the Trump administration, the FDA permanently repealed the rule, which had long been decried by medical experts as unnecessary, in 2021.

This opened the door for providers to send abortion pills by mail in all but the 19 states that outlaw provision of abortion via telemedicine. (Many of those same states now ban abortion entirely.) This regulation change, along with increased popular interest in abortion access following Roe’s overturn, has led to a proliferation of telemedicine companies offering abortion pills. Some of these companies are run by people with prior experience in abortion care and connections in the reproductive health, rights and justice movements; others are not. Regardless, some abortion access advocates are raising concerns about whether the rise of for-profit telemedicine companies is the best way to serve abortion seekers.
