USA – Community Networks Sharing Free Abortion Pills Expand to States Where Abortion Is Legal but Out of Reach

Volunteer-run mutual aid groups are quietly mailing free abortion pills across the U.S.—reaching tens of thousands of people shut out by cost, distance, privacy concerns and a shrinking clinical system, even in states where abortion remains legal.

In response to abortion bans and restrictions, feminists across the country have created networks of community groups that share abortion pills by mail, free of charge, with people who need them. Mostly run by volunteers, these mutual aid networks have served over 100,000 people since 2022.

“Everybody deserves bodily autonomy,” said one volunteer, who got involved out of rage after the Supreme Court revoked women’s constitutional right to abortion in 2022.

I met Rebecca Nall last week, at the first Abortion In America convening in Austin Texas. The convening, which featured a range of experts and regular people telling their personal stories about abortions and abortion bans, was a beautiful example of community in a time when abortion care is being increasingly threatened. It was also emotionally fraught — listening to stories of people whose lives were turned upside down by the efforts they had to undertake to access reproductive care was disheartening. I was glad to be among them and hearing their stories, but I was also exhausted. After a mentally and emotionally draining day, sitting down with Rebecca Nall was like a strong cup of coffee. Community Providers Have Given Abortion Pills to Over 70,000 People in Restrictive States Since Dobbs

In response to the Supreme Court overturning the constitutional right to abortion in June 2022 and many states banning and restricting abortion access, abortion advocates have created volunteer-run, donor-supported, community-based mutual aid groups around the country to provide free abortion pills to people living in states restricting abortion.

These community providers obtain medication from overseas suppliers, bring them into the country and mail them from within the United States so that people receive them promptly. Many of these groups—including AccessMA, FL Companion Request, Access Pills, Oklahoma Access and Territory Access, among others—serve people of all ages and gestational stages, using different protocols for people in later pregnancy.
