On Roe anniversary, Biden and Democrats point to November as crucial to restoring abortion

Biden must sell the actions he’s taken on abortion and contraception while convincing voters he and the party can do more if they hold the White House and take control of Congress.

White House officials and congressional Democrats are marking the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade with a renewed urgency — and framing the 2024 election as pivotal to restoring federal abortion protections.

A year and a half after the Supreme Court struck down Roe’s federal abortion protections in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, over a dozen states have total abortion bans in effect, and more restrict it before fetal viability, leaving patients without access and providers in limbo. While Republican-led legislatures have passed such restrictions, in the same time frame voters have consistently voted to expand abortion rights and rebuked anti-abortion politicians in high-profile elections.

Democrats believe abortion will motivate voters in 2024. Will it be enough?

The Biden campaign is betting big on abortion rights as a major driver in this year's presidential election

WASHINGTON -- When Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said recently that he was “proud” to have a hand in overturning the abortion protections enshrined in Roe v. Wade, Democratic pollster Celinda Lake took it as a political gift, thinking to herself, “Oh my God, we just won the election.”

It may not be that simple, but as the 2024 race heats up, President Joe Biden's campaign is betting big on abortion rights as a major driver for Democrats in the election. Republicans are still trying to figure out how to talk about the issue, if at all, and avoid a political backlash.

Kamala Harris found her voice on abortion rights in the year after Dobbs. Now she’s making it central to her 2024 message

Vice President Kamala Harris was fed up.
At a March event in Des Moines, Iowa, Harris listened to a shy nursing student recount the harrowing story of a pregnant patient seeking an abortion. The patient’s sudden health complications required the early end of their pregnancy in a state where Republican legislators once tried to prevent doctors from performing an abortion if a fetal heartbeat is detected.

Harris, visibly moved by the nurse’s story, left the meeting telling aides it was just another example of why no one – including Republicans racing to pass restrictive abortion bans across the country – knows what leads someone to get an abortion. Harris left the event railing at the stigma women face for doing so, a staffer told CNN.

WASHINGTON — Two Texas women whose doctors refused to perform legal and medically urgent abortions met Tuesday with first lady Jill Biden, recounting their ordeals as the White House pressures Congress to codify rights the Supreme Court erased nearly a year ago.

“Even prayed-for, planned pregnancies can end in abortion,” said one of the women, Austin Dennard, a Dallas physician with two kids and a third due in August. “The state of Texas should not be making these decisions for me or for anybody else.”
