The NSW leader of One Nation has told a rally outside state parliament that he will seek tighter controls on abortion if his party is successful in the March election.
Mike Newman, who is seeking election in the Hunter Valley seat of Cessnock, was speaking alongside prominent anti-abortion campaigner Joanna Howe.
Dr Howe, a professor of law at the University of Adelaide, welcomed the One Nation leader to the stage, endorsing him as the "next premier of NSW".

In the 19th century, each state and territory inherited a version of the British criminal or penal code. All contained some kind of offence of “illegal abortion” with most not stipulating what in particular made abortion illegal. A Nationals MLC targeted over a bill to ban sex-selection abortion in NSW has accused campaign organisers of being “politically mischievous” amid a surge in support for One Nation, and that the Bill was a “dog whistle” for debate around “migration and differences of religion”.
Wes Fang took to social media over the weekend to call-out “misinformation” around Libertarian MLC John Ruddick’s abortion Law Reform Amendment (Sex Selection Prohibition) Bill 2025, which is expected to be debated during a conscience vote later this year.
Some pregnant people face harassment and bullying from family members pushing for termination.

Anti-immigrant rhetoric is playing a growing role in the pro-life movement as conservative politicians attempt to revive their attacks on abortion rights.
The debate over reproductive healthcare has returned to the national spotlight after One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce spoke at an anti-abortion rally outside NSW Parliament as his party rides a wave of anti-immigrant sentiment to new polling highs.
While the anti-abortion movement has a long history in Australia, this latest push appears to have a new, racialised tilt.

A South Australian upper house MP plans to introduce her third bill in under two years to restrict late-term abortions, but local GPs have an advocacy plan of their own.
Upper House MP Sarah Game, formerly of One Nation, wants to ban abortions after 25 weeks unless necessary to save the mother’s life.
SA-based sexual health GP Dr Clare Keogh warned The Medical Republic the proposal may deter vulnerable patients from seeking care.

The headline act at a Sydney anti-abortion rally being held on Tuesday in support of Libertarian MP John Ruddick’s bill to restrict abortion will not be Ruddick.
It will be the One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce. Joyce left the Nationals last year, not long after he was rebuked for his statements about abortion.
The dramatic rise in the polls of his new party has given fresh impetus to a loose network of anti-abortion groups trying to chip away at reproductive rights.

A proposed NSW law to ban sex-selective abortion is being driven by “racist and anti-immigration rhetoric”, according to Albury MP Dr Amanda Cohn.
Sex-selective abortion refers to terminating a pregnancy because of the sex of the foetus — typically after an ultrasound reveals it is female. The practice has been documented in some overseas countries, including China and India, where cultural preferences for sons have historically contributed to skewed birth ratios in parts of the population.
