“I hope it’s okay to say that I’m affected by an abortion ban too,” Garin Marschall, a father from New York, said into the mic from the stage of the second-annual convening of Abortion in America, the nonprofit organization founded by the late Cecile Richards, Lauren Peterson, and Kaitlyn Joshua. Marschall’s wife Erika’s first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage and D&C (dilation and curettage) at 10 weeks; her second was mired with complications, culminating with them learning, at 30 weeks, that the pregnancy was no longer viable. It was 2016, they were living in Brooklyn, with a doctor on the Upper West Side, and yet they were told that no one in New York, a deep-blue state, would be able to perform the late-term abortion they needed and they would have to fly to Colorado.
