When Ciji Graham visited a cardiologist on Nov. 14, 2023, her heart was pounding at 192 beats per minute, a rate healthy people her age usually reach during the peak of a sprint. She was having another episode of atrial fibrillation, a rapid, irregular heartbeat. The 34-year-old Greensboro, North Carolina, police officer was at risk of a stroke or heart failure.

In the past, doctors had always been able to shock Graham’s heart back into rhythm with a procedure called a cardioversion. But this time, the treatment was just out of reach. After a pregnancy test came back positive, the cardiologist didn’t offer to shock her. Graham texted her friend from the appointment: “Said she can’t cardiovert being pregnant.”

MANILA, Philippines — Women seeking to terminate unwanted pregnancies seem to have found solace in online selling platforms, where vendors openly offer “abortion pills” or herbal potions marketed as remedies to “regulate” menstruation.

A quick search on several e-commerce sites, and even on Facebook, shows that these pills can be purchased through anonymous accounts — many of which are now inactive. In a few public online groups, sellers even post glowing reviews, with images of expelled embryos or sanitary pads soaked in blood clots and screenshots of conversations with “satisfied” customers.

This is where 25-year-old Mary Olouch was buried after dying from a botched abortion in Karabok, a village in western Kenya. Next door, her young son flips through photos of the mother he barely knew.

Community health volunteer Loice Ochieng believes Mary stayed silent out of fear of stigma. Speaking in Luo, Loice said Mary likely hid the truth because she knew abortion was illegal and feared rejection from her community.

Mary’s story is not unique. In Kenya, abortion is only legal in certain circumstances, such as when a woman’s life or health is at risk. However, the interpretation of what constitutes a health risk remains widely debated.

Doctors charged over death of pregnant woman in Polish hospital that prompted abortion protests

May 30, 2025
Notes from Poland

Three doctors have been charged over the death of a pregnant woman, named only as Dorota, while she was in hospital under their care. Prosecutors found that “there was a failure to undertake appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, which led to the patient’s death”.

Dorota’s death in 2023 prompted mass protests against Poland’s near-total abortion ban, which activists blamed for the doctors’ decision not to terminate the pregnancy despite it threatening the woman’s life. It also led the then government to take action to ensure pregnant women receive appropriate medical care.
