As Expected, Minors Are Among Those Most Impacted by Anti-Abortion Laws

“Without access to abortion, these girls have lost the ability to control their lives and their futures,” one researcher said.

In the aftermath of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, advocates warned that minors, whose ability to travel across state lines or buy abortion pills online is already constrained, would be among those most impacted by state abortion bans. A new study published in JAMA Pediatrics this week found that two-thirds of girls ages 13 to 17 now live in states that ban or severely restrict their abortion access.
Specifically, the study reported that 66% of teen girls in this age range live in states with total bans, bans with severe gestational limits (between six and 22 weeks), and parental involvement requirements for them to access abortion.

“Minors are often targeted by restrictive policies and less able to use routes to abortion care common for adults—traveling to another state or using telehealth—leaving them disproportionately impacted,” Laura Lindberg, a professor at the Rutgers School of Public Health and author of the study, said in a statement. “Without access to abortion, these girls have lost the ability to control their lives and their futures.”

India – State to form panel to protect minors’ identities in abortion cases: Bombay High Court told

The State Public Health Department also pledged to widely publicize the Supreme Court’s ruling on this subject through the State's website, social media, and workshops for medical practitioners and field officers.

The State of Maharashtra on Thursday assured the Bombay High Court that it will constitute a committee within two weeks to oversee the implementation of a 2022 Supreme Court ruling that allowed the protection of minors' identities in abortion/ medical terminations of pregnancy (MTP) cases.

The Supreme Court's ruling allows registered medical practitioners (RMPs) to withhold the identity of a minor when mandatorily reporting a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act), but only if the minor and their guardian specifically request it.

USA – Helping a minor travel for an abortion? Some states have made it a crime.

Last year, Idaho became the first state to outlaw ‘abortion trafficking,’ and in May, Tennessee enacted a similar law

Helping a pregnant minor travel to get a legal abortion without parental consent is now a crime in at least two Republican-led states, prompting legal action by abortion-rights advocates and copycat legislation from conservative lawmakers in a handful of other states.

Last year, Idaho became the first state to outlaw “abortion trafficking,” which it defined as “recruiting, harboring or transporting” a pregnant minor to get an abortion or abortion medication without parental permission. In May, Tennessee enacted a similar law. And Republican lawmakers in Alabama, Mississippi and Oklahoma introduced abortion trafficking bills during their most recent legislative sessions, although those bills failed to advance before the sessions ended.

Brazilian Justice Accepts Father’s Request and Denies Abortion for Abused Teen

13-year-old teenager expressed desire to terminate pregnancy to the Tutelary Council

Isabella Menon, SÃO PAULO

A 13-year-old teenager living in Goiás had her legal abortion denied by the Goiás Court of Justice, after her father went to court and requested the prohibition of the procedure.

The young girl is already 28 weeks pregnant, making the procedure more difficult.

In testimony to the Tutelary Council in her area, she stated that she wanted to terminate the pregnancy when she was 18 weeks along. In messages sent to the council, she said that if she did not have access to the procedure, she would find a way to do it on her own.

Texas Is Still Targeting Kate Cox After Her Historic Abortion Win

BY MARY ZIEGLER
DEC 08, 2023

Before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022, states required minors seeking abortion without the involvement of their parents to seek a court order. Today, after the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Woman’s Health Organization, an adult woman had to do the same thing, even when her life and fertility were at risk. While a judge ruled in her favor on Thursday, issuing a temporary restraining order granting her doctor the right to perform the procedure without facing penalties, the state of Texas is still determined to stop her.

Kate Cox, who is 20 weeks pregnant with her third child, learned that her child had full trisomy 18, a genetic condition that is almost always fatal in utero or the first year after birth. Physicians warned her that continuing the pregnancy put her at high risk of developing gestational diabetes and hypertension—and that a third Cesarean section might also deprive Cox of the ability to have another child. Her physician nevertheless turned away her request for an abortion, concerned about “the loss of her medical license, life in prison, and massive civil fines.”

Mexico: minors can abort if raped without parents’ consent

May 24, 2022
By Meleny Gradillas

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico's Supreme Court has ruled that an underage girl can get an abortion without parental consent if she had been raped.

The court ruled Tuesday it was not necessary to have filed a crime report about the rape; the victim only has to swear she was raped. The court held last year that it was unconstitutional to punish abortion.

As Mexico’s highest court, its ruling barred all jurisdictions from charging a woman with a crime for terminating a pregnancy. Statutes outlawing abortion are still on the books in most of Mexico’s 32 states.

Abortion was already readily available in Mexico City and some states.

India – New abortion rules recognise minors as vulnerable, seek to make services more accessible to them

Jagriti Chandra, NEW DELHI
OCTOBER 30, 2021

The new abortion rules notified by the Government recently recognise minors as a vulnerable category and seek to make services more accessible to them. But social stigma and conflict with POCSO Act, 2012, or the law against child sexual abuse, pose hurdles.

The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Amendment Rules, 2021, define new categories of vulnerable women who are allowed termination up to 24 weeks upon meeting certain conditions and with the permission of two doctors. These include minors, survivors of sexual assault and those with foetal malformation among others. Others may seek abortion up to 20 weeks with the permission of one doctor upon meeting certain criteria…
