Spain – The Supreme Court orders Ayuso to open the registry of abortion objectors

Justice backs the Ministry of Health's appeal and warns of the Madrid government's "passivity" in complying with the law

March 9, 2026

Barcelona – The High Court of Justice of Madrid has ordered the Community of Madrid to begin "immediately" the procedures for the creation of the registry of objectors for voluntary pregnancy interruptions, a list mandatory by law and approved by the Interterritorial Council (with the presence of all autonomous communities). The minutes of the eighth section of the contentious-administrative chamber of the court is a new step in the tug-of-war that the government of the popular Isabel Díaz Ayuso maintains with the ministry of Mónica García in resisting the creation of the registry of professionals who refuse to perform abortions. In fact, the judges support the precautionary measures requested by the ministry.

Right-wing and far-right politicians launched an offensive against abortion on Monday at an 'ultra' summit in the Spanish Senate, despite the left-wing government's criticism of Spain's right-wing Partido Popular for compromising the neutrality of this state institution.

The Spanish Senate, where Spain’s Partido Popular (PP/EPP), the main opposition force to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's (PSOE/S&D) government, has a majority, hosted the VI Transatlantic Summit Against Abortion, an international forum bringing together 300 representatives of the far-right and right-wing camps from 45 countries.

A member of the Spanish far-right group Vox has been performing ultrasounds on pregnant women outside abortion clinics in Madrid. Gádor Joya, a pediatrician and a deputy in the Madrid regional assembly, says she has been providing the free service – dubbed the “Life Ambulance Project” – from a van because she believes women “don’t know what they are carrying inside them” when they get pregnant.

“I and other doctors have been giving these women ultrasounds… Precisely because I have been doing this, I know what has been hidden from these women. Most of them, when they receive the information and hear the heartbeat, decide to go forward with their pregnancies,” said Joya at a regional health committee meeting on November 5.
