Nigeria – IRISE Seeks Inclusion Of Rape, Incest Into Stop Guideline

In a move to reshape public narratives around sexual and reproductive health, the Initiative to Resist Institutional Slavery and Exploitation (IRISE) has urged the Lagos State Government to include rape and incest into the Safe Termination of Pregnancy (STOP) Guidelines.

The stop guidelines are medical rules that help doctors decide when a pregnancy can be safely ended to protect a woman’s life. IRISE Executive Director, Omodele Ibitoye Ejeh made the call during a two-day training for journalists on Rights-based, Evidence-driven Reporting in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

In a press release signed by the Director, IRISE, Nigeria, Omodele Ibitoye Ejeh, the group justified their request adding that Women in Nigeria have continued to face multiple barriers including legal restrictions.

Nigeria – IRISE Harps On Safe Abortion, Convenes Stakeholders’ Meeting For Support System

As efforts are being made globally to ensure a safer reproductive health system, a nongovernmental organisation, Initiative to Resist Institutional Slavery and Exploitation (IRISE) has highlighted that some social factors militating against safe abortion include stigmatisation, cultural and religious considerations, need for male involvement in health decisions, economic barriers affecting access to services, information accessibility challenges and legal misunderstanding.

They made these known during a stakeholders’ meeting to find solutions to unsafe abortion practices which are destroying not just the youth but also women of reproductive age.

AS efforts are being made globally to ensure a safer reproductive health system, a Non-Governmental Organisation, Initiative to Resist Institutional Slavery and Exploitation (IRISE) has convened a stakeholders’ meeting to find solution to unsafe abortion practices which are destroying not just the youth but also women of reproductive age.

This much was revealed at a stakeholders’ meeting convened by IRISE on 23th of November, 2024… Leading to the meeting was a survey conducted in October, 2024 aimed to understand community specific factors affecting Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) and the impact of unsafe abortion practices in Oshodi-Isolo.

Nigeria – IRISE takes Reproductive Health Campaign to Lagos State communities, harps on women’s rights

Initiative to Resist Institutional Slavery and Exploitation (IRISE) has taken the campaign for Reproductive Health and Family Planning to Lagos State communities, stressing more on the right of women to make vital decisions on health matters concerning them.

… Omodele Ibitoye Ejeh, the Executive Director of IRISE, the One Billion Rising Coordinator in Nigeria and a Professional Counselor with over 22 years of experience, speaking on what informed her organising the campaign said “The campaign titled in Yoruba, “To Bà Sé Wo”, meaning, If It Is You, is looking at sexual reproductive health, education and right, and we are actually focusing on stigmatization from abortion and death from unsafe abortion.”
