Europe to vote on scheme to help abortion access

PARIS - The EU's parliament will vote on Wednesday on a scheme that would enable women from nations restricting abortion to terminate pregnancies in another member state free of charge.

The "My Voice, My Choice" citizens' initiative proposes ‍a ​fund from the EU budget to cover procedures for people from ‍nations with near-total bans such as Malta and Poland or places where abortion is hard to access like Italy and ​Croatia.

For progressives in Europe, 2013 was a year of hope. France adopted historic legislation legalising same-sex marriage. Only a few months later, the UK extended similar rights through the Marriage Act.  Portugal implemented a new law to protect transgender rights.  And even Ireland — long a Catholic stronghold — introduced new measures to shield queer youth from bullying.

But 2013 also marked a turning point for a group of religious conservatives. Alarmed by what they saw as an erosion of traditional values, they began to mobilise. A decade later, activism once confined to the political fringe has evolved into a billion-euro operation seeking to defeat “gender ideology.”

Spain – Right and far-right parties launch global anti-abortion offensive in Madrid

Right-wing and far-right politicians launched an offensive against abortion on Monday at an 'ultra' summit in the Spanish Senate, despite the left-wing government's criticism of Spain's right-wing Partido Popular for compromising the neutrality of this state institution.

The Spanish Senate, where Spain’s Partido Popular (PP/EPP), the main opposition force to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's (PSOE/S&D) government, has a majority, hosted the VI Transatlantic Summit Against Abortion, an international forum bringing together 300 representatives of the far-right and right-wing camps from 45 countries.
