Global anti-feminist backlash gains ground after decades of equality gains

Spain and France justify enshrining the right to abortion in their Constitutions as a safeguard against a ‘reactionary’ wave that could roll back achievements

History never advances in a straight line. Although, as Martin Luther King said, “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Progress always moves in fits and starts: two steps forward, one step back. This is also the case with women’s rights and equality.

For a decade or more — in Western countries and in the Global South — there have been numerous cases of rights being stripped away after a long period of progress. This regression — according to progressive and liberal political leaders — is linked to the global rise of new forms of authoritarianism and nationalism.

SPAIN moves to enshrine abortion as constitutional right

MADRID – The Spanish government on Friday proposed a constitutional reform to protect abortion rights, amid a political row between Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s Socialist Party, the conservative Popular Party (PP) and far-right Vox over alleged misinformation promoted by Madrid’s PP-led city council.

“In a global context of attacks on sexual and reproductive rights, this step is needed to guarantee women’s freedom and autonomy,” government sources said. The initiative follows a PP–Vox-backed measure passed by Madrid PP-ruled city council obliging health centres to provide information on alleged “post-abortion trauma.”

Right-wing and far-right politicians launched an offensive against abortion on Monday at an 'ultra' summit in the Spanish Senate, despite the left-wing government's criticism of Spain's right-wing Partido Popular for compromising the neutrality of this state institution.

The Spanish Senate, where Spain’s Partido Popular (PP/EPP), the main opposition force to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's (PSOE/S&D) government, has a majority, hosted the VI Transatlantic Summit Against Abortion, an international forum bringing together 300 representatives of the far-right and right-wing camps from 45 countries.

The conservative leader of Spain’s Castilla y León region has defied his far-right coalition partners by insisting that a series of controversial anti-abortion protocols that prompted the central government to launch legal action will not be enacted.

Last week the far-right Vox party, which governs Castilla y León in coalition with the larger conservative People’s party (PP), announced “pro-life” proposals that would oblige doctors to offer women seeking terminations a 4D scan, a chance to listen to the foetal heartbeat, and a psychological consultation.
