USA – Abortion Misinformation Is All Over the Internet. You Can Blame Big Tech Censorship.

Social media creators and reproductive rights organizations are having their content about abortion censored—including us.

HeyJane, a telemedicine abortion provider, has had its TikTok account banned three times. Plan C, an organization that provides information about accessing abortion pills by mail, has had multiple posts across platforms taken down, along with an Instagram account suspension. Even Rewire News Group’s own TikTok account was banned, without notice or explanation.

These are just a few examples that highlight the widespread issue of social media platforms suppressing abortion and reproductive health-related speech. Activists, doctors, and organizations now fear having their engagement plummet, posts taken down, or accounts banned with even one mention of the word abortion.

USA – Abortion Groups Say Tech Companies Suppress Posts and Accounts

The groups say they are increasingly confused and frustrated by how major technology platforms moderate posts about abortion services.

TikTok has briefly suspended the account of Hey Jane, a prominent telemedicine abortion service, four times without explanation. Instagram has suspended Mayday Health, a nonprofit that provides information about abortion pill access, without explanation as well. And the search engine Bing has erroneously flagged the website for Aid Access, a major seller of abortion pills online, as unsafe.

The groups and women’s health advocates say these examples, all from recent months, show why they are increasingly confused and frustrated by how major technology platforms moderate posts about abortion services.

Is TikTok Censoring Pro-Abortion Content?

Sex and censorship has always been a divisive topic, almost always met with pearl-clutching protest. 'Think of the children' attitudes are infiltrating social media feeds and causing a spree of virtuous violence against educators, activists and sex workers. Abortion is no different. Now, pro-choice groups focused on drawing attention to abortion access and empowering their communities are falling victim to conservative policing on one of the largest and fastest-growing social media apps on the market: TikTok.

This censorship is endemic across the app but doesn’t seem to be affecting right-wing groups or, for that matter, pro-lifers. One activist group, Rogue Valley Pepper Shakers (@rvpeppershakers), which defends Planned Parenthood clinics from so-called 'pro-life' harassment and posts information on abortion resources, is one of many groups facing unnecessary censorship from TikTok.
