U.S. President’s Global Gag Rule is Having Negative Impact on the Health of Malawians: Report

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 19 2020 (IPS) - A report released last week has detailed the complex ways in which President Donald Trump’s ‘Global Gag Rule’ (GGR), that blocks U.S. global health assistance to foreign non-governmental facilities providing abortion or abortion-related services, is affecting the population in Malawi, a country already hard hit with numerous climate change disasters.

The report, titled ‘A Powerful Force: U.S. Global Health Assistance and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Malawi’ was released on Feb. 10 by Washington, D.C.-based sexual and reproductive health rights organisation CHANGE, the Center for Health and Gender Equity.

Malawi NGOs to be hit by Trump’s abortion order

Nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) in Malawi that provide and promote abortion after receiving funds from the United States will have to anticipate for aid cut as the Donald Trump administration signed a decree to do so.

Weeks ago, the US leader reinstated a global gag rule that bans U.S.-funded groups around the world from discussing abortion.

The order known as the Mexico City policy, established by Republican President Ronald Reagan in 1984, blocks federal funding for international family planning charities that provide abortions or actively promote the procedure.

Malawi’s leading reproductive health service provider, Banja La Mtsogolo (BLM), has backed calls for legalization of safe abortion in the country arguing that many women are dying due to unsafe abortion.

Speaking during celebrations of 30 years of providing reproductive health services in Malawi, BLM has supported calls to legalize safe abortion saying that the move can help in saving a lot of resources and lives of women.

BLM country director Nicky Matthews said Malawi should consider legalizing safe abortion to save lives of many women who go for unsafe abortion.
