Konika is 20 years old, and the mother of three girls. Like many local young women, she decided to have an abortion when she became pregnant for the fourth time within five years. Citing financial issues as the driving force behind her decision, despite her mother-in-laws desire for her to have another child, hoping this time it would be a boy.

Established in 1949, the Family Planning Association of India (FPA India) is a founding member of International Planned Parenthood Federation. FPA India strengthens a voluntary commitment to advocate for SRH and Rights and, choices. It promotes access to SRH information and services related to family planning, safe abortions, HIV/AIDS and sexuality to poor, marginalised and vulnerable populations including young people. Its work in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) covers safe motherhood and child survival, empowerment of women, male involvement, adolescent health and youth development.

Abortion is legal in India, but in some areas, 80 per cent of women do not know this. Many take matters into their own hands instead, using untested herbal remedies or visiting backstreet clinics – one death every two hours is caused by unsafe abortion, research suggests.

A “lack of information, stigma, and probably knowledge of a safe facility” stops Indian women, particularly in rural areas, from ending pregnancies without putting their lives in danger, said Vinoj Manning, head of global reproductive rights charity Ipas in India.
