Unsafe abortions, major contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality in Ghana – Lecturer

Unsafe induced abortions are a significant contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality in Ghana which raises serious public health concerns, Dr Susan Ama Amuasi, a Lecturer at the Central University, has observed. 

She said with the growing number of young populations globally and an ever-changing sociocultural environment and circumstances, there was a tendency for unwanted pregnancies and abortions.

Ghana – Support GHS to eradicate unsafe abortion – UWR Deputy Director of PH

The Deputy Director of Public Health at the Upper West Regional Health Directorate, Dr Richard Wodah-Seme has called on stakeholders to support the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to eradicate unsafe abortion in the region.

The Deputy Director enumerated that between 2017 and 2021, the region recorded 1,750 incomplete unsafe abortions with three maternal deaths and 77 post abortion services.

Are our mothers free and safe from the challenges they face during pregnancy till child birth? Is Ghana free from maternal mortality? What is our nation doing about maternal mortality? A lot of lives were lost when we talk of maternal and child mortality, people lost their love ones, people lost their new born which they were looking forward to getting for years. Lives that can contribute to the development of this nation. In fact Ghana has lost so many lives especially in our rural areas due to less development of our health system. Pregnancy is one physiological condition that differentiates a man from a woman and leads to the procreation of young ones and should not be the cause of elimination of human life.
