Abortion law change to make doctors report woman’s marital status sought

A number of anti-abortion TDs have proposed new changes to the abortion legislation which would require a doctor to report whether a woman had any previous abortions, what age and ethnicity she is and whether she is married.

If a medical practitioner does not do this, they could be fined or jailed for up to five years.

An amendment proposing that abortions are not sought on grounds of race, sex or disability under the Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy Bill has been defeated in the Dáil.

Following a lengthy and often tense Report Stage debate which began last night, TDs voted against the amendment by 71 votes to 21.

The measure is just one of several amendments put down ahead of the three-day discussion of the proposed abortion legislation at the Oireachtas Health Committee next week.

A number of deputies who campaigned for a No vote in the recent abortion referendum have accused the Minister for Health of failing to engage meaningfully with them over the Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy Bill.

Independent deputies Mattie McGrath, Michael Collins, Carol Nolan, Peter Fitzpatrick and Danny Healy-Rae said that while the public voted to remove the Eighth Amendment from the Constitution, they did not vote in favour of the Bill in its current form.

Minister for Health Simon Harris has described as “horrific and bizarre” a suggestion that abortion will in time be used as contraception.

He described such a mindset as worrying and said these sorts of views were offensive, ignorant, and showed a “fundamental lack of respect for women”.

Plans are at an advanced stage for the creation of an informal political group to promote rural issues and an anti-abortion message, according to Independent TD Mattie McGrath.

The Tipperary TD told The Irish Times that a new year launch was envisaged for the group, which he is setting up with Independent TD for Cork South West Michael Collins.
