Government Should Strengthen Policies For Safe Abortions

Mr Philip Duah, Communication and Advocacy Chairman of the Youth Advisory Board, Ipas Ghana, has called for the enforcement of existing policies and laws on safe abortions to reverse the current abortion-related deaths among women and adolescent girls.

Making reference to a World Health Organization (WHO) reports, he said 7 million women in developing countries were admitted to hospitals every year as a result of unsafe abortion, whiles 4.7 to 13.2 per cent of maternal deaths occurring each year, can be attributed to unsafe abortions.

Ipas Ghana Youth Advisory Board has called on health authorities to make comprehensive sexual and reproductive healthcare services for people in the country accessible, especially to young women.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Samuel Nii Lante Lamptey, a board member of Ipas, said the risk of death following complications from the perceived inaccessibility of these services is several times more than that of safe abortion performed by well-trained health service providers.

‘More women die from unsafe abortion’

Unsafe abortion claims the lives of over 47,000 women globally each year, with Africa recording more than 90 per cent of the total deaths. Frequent,unnecessary and unsafe abortion committed by the youth, as well as the lack of access to reproductive health services, could be the causes.

The Communication and Advocacy Chairman of IPAS Ghana’s Youth Advisory Board (YAB), Mr Philip Duah, said this when he addressed the press last Monday after a stakeholders meeting.

He has, therefore, called for strong and persistent efforts by the government, related organisations and institutions to work at improving reproductive health services, particularly for the youth, to help reduce the high rate of unsafe abortion and related deaths.

Group calls for NHIS cover for unsafe abortion

A civil society group IPA is making a bold argument asking government to include abortion treatment to the NHIS.

According to the group it will make more sense and come as a great benefit to the country when the culturally prohibited act is listed onto the scheme.

The group argued that the move will rather lessen financial burden on the scheme if the cost is absorbed by the NHIS.
