Mr Philip Duah, Communication and Advocacy Chairman of the Youth Advisory Board, Ipas Ghana, has called for the enforcement of existing policies and laws on safe abortions to reverse the current abortion-related deaths among women and adolescent girls.

Making reference to a World Health Organization (WHO) reports, he said 7 million women in developing countries were admitted to hospitals every year as a result of unsafe abortion, whiles 4.7 to 13.2 per cent of maternal deaths occurring each year, can be attributed to unsafe abortions.

Ghana: ‘More women die from unsafe abortion’

‘More women die from unsafe abortion’

Samuel Duodu, 26 October 2017

Unsafe abortion claims the lives of over 47,000 women globally each year, with Africa recording more than 90 per cent of the total deaths. Frequent, unnecessary and unsafe abortion committed by the youth, as well as the lack of access to reproductive health services, could be the causes.

The Communication and Advocacy Chairman of IPAS Ghana’s Youth Advisory Board (YAB), Mr Philip Duah, said this when he addressed the press last Monday after a stakeholders meeting.

He has, therefore, called for strong and persistent efforts by the government, related organisations and institutions to work at improving reproductive health services, particularly for the youth, to help reduce the high rate of unsafe abortion and related deaths.

According to the group it will make more sense and come as a great benefit to the country when the culturally prohibited act is listed onto the scheme.

The group argued that the move will rather lessen financial burden on the scheme if the cost is absorbed by the NHIS.
