N. Ireland – Secretary of State gains power to direct commissioning of abortion services

Regulations giving the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland powers to direct the commissioning of abortion services have been approved by Westminster.

The Abortion (Northern Ireland) Regulations 2021 were approved by MPs in a 431-89 vote on Tuesday and agreed by Lords yesterday afternoon.

Abortion: House of Lords backs NI regulations

The House of Lords has overwhelmingly backed abortion regulations for Northern Ireland despite opposition by the Stormont Assembly.

Peers supported the provisions by 355 votes to 77.

An earlier bid led by independent crossbencher Baroness O'Loan for the regulations to be rejected was defeated by 388 votes to 112.
