South Africa – Mothers who abort never really request to bury the foetus, says abortion advocacy group

Gauteng - While the parents of babies miscarried at under 26 weeks can finally bury their foetus if they so wish, whether or not mothers who terminate pregnancy should be given the same allowance remains a heated debate.

A mother who requested to remain anonymous said she opted to have an abortion at six weeks and didn’t want to have the option of burying the foetus as a funeral would result in a lot of questions from friends and family regarding her choice to abort.

More than 2,000 medically preserved foetal remains have been found at the Illinois home of a former Indiana abortion clinic doctor who died last week, authorities have said.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release late on Friday that an attorney for Dr Ulrich Klopfer’s family contacted the coroner’s office about possible foetal remains being found at the home in north-east Illinois

Latest: The Health Committee has rejected amendments to abortion legislation put forward by a group of pro-life TDs.

The Committee has so far examined almost 130 amendments of 180 tabled in relation to a Bill to allow for abortion in this country.

Simon Harris has criticised attempts by a small number of TDs to make burials or cremations compulsory after a woman has an abortion.

Nine TDs want to amend the abortion bill to make it a criminal offence for a woman not to have a burial or a cremation after a termination, including in cases in which they had taken abortion pills prescribed by a GP at home.

Anti-abortion campaigners are lobbying to make it mandatory for a burial to be held after a pregnancy is terminated.

Activists have been urged to “visit” TDs and put pressure on them to make abortion law as restrictive as possible, making it mandatory for women to be told about adoption and parenting, and to be offered an ultrasound scan before they can access a termination.

My team at Whole Woman’s Health and I are bruised and battered beyond what you could imagine. And yet, I am ready to fight again.

In July, four days after the Supreme Court overturned two provisions that restricted women’s access to abortion in Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott proposed a new abortion restriction to the Texas Department of Health and Human Services. The new restriction would require all women who have an embryo or fetus removed due to abortion, miscarriage, or ectopic pregnancy surgery at a medical facility to cremate or have a funeral for the removed tissue. On Nov. 29, the Department of Health and Human Services approved the restriction, with a plan to put it into effect by Dec. 19.
