Lucy Brown, a medical student at Indiana University, wanted to stay in Indiana for her OB-GYN residency, but when Roe v. Wade was overturned last June, her priorities shifted.

States with abortion bans in place fell to the bottom of Brown's list. "I really, really wanted to stay in the Midwest. I wanted to be close to my family, but it kind of conflicted with my No. 1 priority," Brown told ABC News.

Indiana abortion clinics see patients amid legal changes

It’s a glimmer of hope and common sense,” Dr. Jeanne Corwin, who traveled from Cincinnati to Indianapolis on Friday to provide abortions, said of last week’s ruling blocking Indiana’s abortion ban.

INDIANAPOLIS — Dr. Jeanne Corwin traveled about two hours on Friday from her hometown of Cincinnati to an Indianapolis abortion clinic, where she saw the clinic’s first 12 patients the day after an Indiana judge blocked the state’s abortion ban from being enforced.

It’s a trip Corwin has made several times over the past few months, as her Ohio medical license allows her to sign off on required paperwork for Women’s Med patients in Indiana to access care in the clinic’s sister location in Dayton.

A sweeping new abortion ban went into effect in Indiana Thursday, outlawing the procedure with limited exceptions. The state was the first in the nation to pass legislation after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June.

Most of the lights are now off at Women's Med, an Indianapolis abortion provider. The clinic is among two Indiana providers slated to close, while the state's five remaining clinics will offer limited health care.

Dr. Katie McHugh doesn’t sleep much these days. After working 12-hour shifts at several abortion clinics in Indiana, McHugh, an OB/GYN, doesn’t collapse into bed. Thoughts of her patients keep her up at night: the pregnant woman who drove 20 hours to the clinic, scared and desperate to receive an abortion; the families dodging anti-abortion protestors shouting threats at them through a bullhorn in clinic parking lots; the patients she couldn’t help.

New abortion restrictions may push patients to more expensive, complicated care

With longer wait times, patients could be forced into their second trimester.

As more states enact near-total bans and restrictions on abortion, providers say many patients are experiencing delayed care which can force them into later stages of pregnancy.

Abortion care options are becoming more limited and complex in some cases, which often means higher costs for patients. For example, medication abortion, which is less costly than other options, is only an option up to 10 weeks into pregnancy.

Doctors weren’t considered in Dobbs, but now they’re on abortion’s legal front lines

Historically, doctors have played a big role in abortion's legality. Back in the 1860s, physicians with the newly-formed American Medical Association worked to outlaw abortion in the U.S.

A century later, they were doing the opposite.

On a frigid evening in January, Dr Katie McHugh welcomed 20 guests into her Indianapolis home and prepared to tell them a secret she had kept for seven years. They had come for a Planned Parenthood fundraiser party; among them were her father and two sisters. As they gathered in her living room, sipping wine, McHugh’s hands shook.

“I was quite nervous, but I wanted to get my secret out as soon as I could,” she says. “I said, ‘Welcome. I’m glad you’re all here. I’m Katie McHugh. I’m an OB-GYN here in Indianapolis, and I’m also an abortion provider.’ My father visibly flinched. Then I stopped to take a breath, and everyone applauded, including my family.
