An anti-abortion campaign has described plans to continue remote consultations for women seeking access to abortion care in the State as “extremely reckless”.
Women seeking an abortion during the coronavirus pandemic did not need to visit a GP in person, but this measure was due to lapse following the end of Covid 19 travel restrictions.

Around a thousand people have marched in Dublin to mark the tenth anniversary of the death of Savita Halappanavar and to call for changes to abortion laws.
Speaking at the Garden of Remembrance before the march set off, Orla O'Connor of the National Women's Council called for an end to the three-day waiting period before a woman can get an abortion and the abolition of the 12-week limit.

Anti-abortion campaigners have called on the Government to make changes to Ireland’s abortion laws, three years after they were introduced following the referendum on the Eighth Amendment.
The Pro Life Campaign staged an event on Tuesday outside Leinster House to launch ‘Ireland’s Abortion Law: End the Silence’, which focuses on the Government’s three year review of abortion legislation.

Only one in 10 GPs in the State provide abortion services, according to a paper published by the National Women’s Council.
While GPs providing early medical abortions are “very committed”, coverage remains a significant barrier to accessing services in rural areas and in marginalised communities, it states.

Campaigners against abortion have criticised the Minister for Health for issuing new service guidelines due to the Covid-19 emergency.
Currently, services for termination in early pregnancy require a medical practitioner to examine a pregnant woman before coming to the reasonable opinion that her pregnancy has not exceeded 12 weeks.

Women between nine and 12 weeks pregnant seeking an abortion may be referred to a consultant obstetrician, Minister for Health Simon Harris has indicated.
Mr Harris was introducing the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill, which gives effect to the outcome of the abortion referendum when 66 per cent of voters supported abortion. He said TDs were making history in bringing the legislation forward to allow for abortion services in Ireland and repealing the Eighth Amendment after 35 years in the Constitution.
