Hundreds of women in rural and regional Victoria have no access to surgical and medical terminations close to where they live, forcing some to travel for hours to get an abortion.

Red tape to prescribe the abortion pill will be removed from this month, but reproductive healthcare providers say the change will not end the “postcode lottery” many women are faced with.

Protesters have clashed with police in Melbourne's city as people rallied in the streets to promote opposing messages about abortion rights.

Pro-choice protesters marched a course through the CBD that was planned to intersect with an anti-abortion march taking place at the same time.

Public hospitals in Victoria would not be allowed to stop doctors from providing abortions under a bill being introduced to state parliament this week by the crossbench MP Fiona Patten.

The legislation follows the overturning of
the landmark Roe v Wade decision in the US in June, and comes with just four
more sitting weeks before Victorians head to the polls in November.
