Singh urges Trudeau to act on abortion access in New Brunswick

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to act immediately to withhold cash transfers to New Brunswick until the province provides funding for out-of-hospital abortion services.
New Brunswick is clearly violating the Canada Health Act, and it is the responsibility of the Prime Minister to step in, Mr. Singh said in a letter to Mr. Trudeau Monday.

Health Minister and lawyer Ted Flemming knowingly permits New Brunswick to contravene the Canada Health Act, the federal law regulating payment of health services. New Brunswick doctor Adrian Edgar says this indicates Flemming is “willfully incompetent” and has called for his resignation.
The Canada Health Act ensures that eligible Canadian residents can access health services approved by Medicare on a prepaid basis, without direct charges at the point of service. Most doctors across Canada operate from private facilities, billing their provincial government for Medicare services. In New Brunswick, the province pays for all Medicare services provided by doctors in private facilities, except abortions.

There may be less red tape surrounding the so-called abortion pill, but many women in Cape Breton will still make the lengthy drive to Halifax if they want to terminate a pregnancy.
The issue, according to advocates, is the reluctance of many family doctors on the island to prescribe Mifegymiso — the brand name for the combination of two pills used to end a pregnancy of up to nine weeks.

Federal Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor is asking all provinces to remove abortion access barriers, saying she is concerned about policies and fees that are “out of step” with federal law.
However, her provincial counterparts in Ontario and New Brunswick – where some patients must pay to access abortion services, in a practice that abortion advocates have flagged as breaching federal health law – have swiftly rebuffed Ms. Petitpas Taylor’s request.

New Brunswick and Ontario are violating a federal health law by forcing patients to pay for their abortions, and Ottawa must act to remove those barriers, according to the head of the National Abortion Federation.
The New Brunswick government doesn’t pay for surgical abortions performed outside of hospitals, meaning patients at a private clinic in Fredericton must pay $700 to $850, according to the clinic website. The only other abortion clinics in New Brunswick are in Bathurst and Moncton. They are in hospitals and receive public funds, but are several hours from Fredericton by car. Many parts of the province have no abortion clinic nearby.

Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor says the fact that dozens of Canadian women are forced to go to the U.S. every year for abortions they cannot get here is “cause for concern” while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he plans to raise the issue of abortion access with Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday.
“We certainly believe that women have the right to choose, and when I hear reports of that nature, it certainly is cause for concern,” said Petitpas Taylor in response to an exclusive report by Global News outlining the gaps in access to abortion that Canadian women face across the country.

The House of Commons just gave a standing ovation for abortion rights — minus the Conservatives

With reproductive rights under assault south of the border, members of the Canadian House of Commons rose in a standing ovation to affirm support for a woman’s right to choose — that is, except the Conservatives.
One day after Global News reported that dozens of Canadian woman across the country are being sent to the U.S. for abortions they cannot access here and on the heel of a pledge by the Quebec government to make late-term abortion accessible to women in the province, Bloc Quebecois MP Monique Pauzé asked for unanimous consent on a motion related to abortion.
