Anti-abortion activist works for crisis pregnancy agency

An anti-abortion activist staging a hunger strike outside the Dáil works for an unregulated crisis pregnancy agency, The Times has learnt.

Tim Jackson said he believed that abortions caused breast cancer and made women suicidal. Last week he started a campaign claiming that he would not eat until Leo Varadkar watched a video of an American anti-abortion activist explaining what a second trimester termination is. The taoiseach said he was willing to watch the video.

As Judge Mary Laffoy gets ready to present her report on the Citizens’ Assembly, Alison O’Connor says we are in for a tortuous few months before we get to vote on the issue.

THIS week, Judge Mary Laffoy will deliver her report to the Government on the conclusions of the Citizens’ Assembly on the future of the eighth amendment to the Constitution.

On one level, we are fully aware of what it is the 100 members who made up the Citizens’ Assembly want, because they voted on it, causing ripples of shock throughout the country, back in April.

Fine Gael TDs Hildegarde Naughton and Peter Fitzpatrick will take the final two slots on the 21-person Oireachtas abortion committee.

Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil combined will continue to command a majority on the Joint Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution, which will consider the recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly.
