Labour Senator and Oireachtas Health Committee Member Annie Hoey has welcomed the belated decision of Government to implement legislation to safeguard women attending abortion services. Senator Hoey said:

“Almost five years have passed since the public voted for compassion in a crisis, and for the last five years, many women attending abortion services have had to put up with abhorrent abuse outside GPs, clinics and hospitals. It’s welcome that Government have finally moved to protect women at their most vulnerable, but it is shameful that it has taken this long to put in place a safeguarding framework.”

The threat of criminal sanctions hangs over medical practitioners who provide abortion services in Ireland, politicians have been told.

Alison Spillane, a senior policy and research officer at the Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA), described to the Oireachtas Health Committee how the fear of prosecution “sits in the consultation room” between patient and doctor.

Politicians will hear calls for a less restrictive abortion regime, including extending the current 12-week limit to allow terminations on request “up to viability”.

The National Women’s Council (NWC) and the Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA) will suggest reforms to the rules on abortion when representatives appear before the Oireachtas Health Committee on Wednesday.

The number of hospitals providing abortions is lower than the nine officially announced in the run-up to the introduction of the service.

Of the maternity units in the State, nine were “confirmed” as being ready to provide the service, Government sources told journalists before Christmas. Another 10 were not ready.

The Health Minister has sent a clear warning to TDs who intend to use tactics to delay abortion legislation when it comes back before the Dáil.

Simon Harris has set down an extremely tight time-frame to get the legislation through the Oireachtas before Christmas and to get doctors on board with providing termination services from the start of January.

Health Minister Simon Harris is expected to reach compromise on a number of changes put forward to the Abortion Bill.

The Termination of Pregnancy Bill passed Committee stage this week, however, Mr Harris will meet members of the Health Committee on Tuesday to thrash out a significant number of amendments which he promised to review before the Bill goes to Report stage.

There were heated exchanges as TDs debated proposed changes to the State’s abortion legislation on Wednesday but Minister for Health Simon Harris has not yet accepted any of the 145 amendments considered.

The Oireachtas Health Committee concluded its second day of debate on the 180 proposed amendments to the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018.

The Committee has so far examined almost 130 amendments of 180 tabled in relation to a Bill to allow for abortion in this country.

The Oireachtas Select Committee on Health has concluded its first day of deliberation over amendments to the Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy Bill.

The Committee has concluded ten sections out of 26 sections, in which there are 180 amendments.

So far the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, has not accepted any changes in the legislation.

SIMON HARRIS HAS said the word ‘abortion’ is not mentioned in the Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy Bill due to legal advice.

The Health Minister and members of the Oireachtas Health Committee are meeting today to consider amendments to the Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy Bill.

A number of TDs want the wording of the Bill to be changed, with Solidarity–People Before Profit TD Bríd Smith saying not using the word ‘abortion’ is an “obfuscation and a deliberate ignoring what’s going on here”.
