The chief medical officer, Tony Holohan, has moved to address concerns about doctors performing terminations beyond the 12-week legal limit.

Abortion up until 12 weeks’ gestation became legal at the start of the month, but concerns have been raised that women who present at 11 weeks’ gestation may take more than a week to complete the procedure.

Clinics ‘shunned’ over abortion legislation meetings

Non-profit women’s health clinics have expressed frustration amid claims that they have been left out of plans to provide access to abortion in Ireland.

The Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA) and the Well Woman Centre have indicated that they have the expertise to provide abortions at up to nine weeks’ gestation. They have not been included, however, in meetings between the Department of Health and medical experts preparing for the legalisation of abortion next January.

The government will review the possibility of GPs offering abortion pills in the event of the law changing next year.

The Department of Health has also confirmed that anti-abortion agencies that refuse to be regulated under new laws could be banned from giving crisis pregnancy advice.
