Every year, 25 million people worldwide end their pregnancies with unsafe abortions, and 22,800 of them die from the consequences. Despite these grim figures, abortion is often not treated like the essential health care service it is. Here, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) midwife Nelly Staderini discusses how MSF has incorporated safe abortion into a standard package of health services.

Training for staff who will be performing abortions is to begin on December 10, even though the legislation has not passed the Oireachtas.

The “educational sessions” will commence next week for all the staff who will be terminating pregnancies from January 1, across community and hospital settings.

Medical staff given outside help to prepare for legalised abortion

The World Health Organisation is to teach Irish doctors and examine their beliefs about abortion.

The initiative, to help prepare them for providing legal terminations from next month, comes as the Department of Health asked the HSE to make sure abortion services would be available in all 19 maternity hospitals from January.
