It’s not even 2019, and Republicans have written at least 17 abortion restrictions for next year

Over the last several weeks, Ohio lawmakers tried to pass one of the toughest abortion restrictions in the country, one that would ban the procedure after the detection of a fetal heartbeat, about six weeks into a pregnancy. That's before most women even know they're pregnant.

Now, other state legislatures are trying to do the same.

2018 has been a big year for pro-choice campaigners. Across the world, women (and men) have argued for more liberal abortion laws – and in some cases they won the argument.

First there was Ireland. In May, ‘Yes’ voters won a landslide victory in a referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment to the Irish Constitution. The Eighth Amendment enshrined the ‘right to life’ of the unborn, meaning that abortion in the Republic of Ireland was prohibited even in cases of fatal fetal abnormality, rape and incest.

Pro-choice groups will try again in 2019 to legalize abortion in Argentina

Supporters of the voluntary interruption of pregnancy (IVE) bill have announced they will make yet another try in March 2019 to get the Argentine Congress to allow women to legally seek an abortion if they so desire, it was reported.

It will be the eighth such an attempt. This time around promoters of the bill hope to gather a greater consensus following the 2018 experience where the initiative made its way through the House of Representatives but was voted against at the Senate.

This December, FII Campaign Manager Asmita Ghosh was selected to be a part of the Asia Safe Abortion Partnership’s Youth Advocacy Institute. The Institute was created for activists working in sexual and reproductive health and rights from across Asia to train in abortion rights advocacy. The four-day workshop saw a mix of hands-on activities, group discussions and seminars by experts in the field.

Asia Safe Abortion Partnership (ASAP) is an abortion rights advocacy organization committed to capacity building at the regional level by connecting and boosting the work of abortion rights activists across Asia in the form of workshops, conferences and small grants.

Mumbai: A 14-year-old rape victim has approached the Bombay High Court seeking permission to terminate her 22-week pregnancy. A vacation bench of Justice Bharati Dangre on Monday directed the victim to be medically examined by a team of expert doctors at the state-run J J Hospital in Mumbai.

"The team should examine her (victim) and submit a detailed report on whether it is feasible and advisable to terminate the pregnancy of the victim," the court said.

The government provides safe abortion service free of cost across the country through various health facilities. However, data show that many women are not taking this service due to lack of awareness and to keep the matter a secret.

Karuna (name changed), a 26-year-old woman from Mugu, got pregnant for the fifth time. She already has four daughters. Considering her poor financial condition, she decided to go for abortion. But, she prioritised secrecy over safety and thus reached Kathmandu traveling a long way. She had to spend around Rs 80,000, including transport fare, medical bills, and food and lodging expenses. She is facing health complications after abortion as she did not have any idea about safe abortion centres.

Women’s rights groups in the Gyeongsang provinces on Tuesday condemned a provincial police agency for investigating 26 women on whether they had abortions.

Members of the women’s rights groups, including the Gyeongnam Women’s United Association, said they held a meeting with officials at the South Gyeongsang Province Police Agency on Monday and delivered a letter of complaint.

Marie Stopes clinics has complied with conditions set by the government for it to provide abortion services in the country.

The conditions, which are aimed at stiffening the regulation of reproductive health services in the country, were issued by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board on November 14.

Citing safety risks, the board imposed a ban restricting the reproductive health clinic from conducting abortions in the country.

MUMBAI: Taking note of a woman’s abortion plea on the grounds that giving birth to a baby with chromosomal abnormalities would affect her mental health, the Bombay high court recently directed the setting up of three consecutive medical boards to examine the matter.

This was for the first time in such a case that the court directed the setting up of a panel (the second one) made exclusively of mental health experts (from JJ Hospital).

COSA President Pastor Derick Mosoana want fathers to consent to an abortion and believes that “young girls in this country are sequestered and misguided by their parents, through misconceptions or social ills and agree to terminate the life of an innocent child.” He added:

The Christian political party now calls for government to allow fathers to be part of the “kill or keep” discussion, and says the sole responsibility of should fall to both parents, or to legal guardians if the parents are underage.
