Editorial: Make regulations
The Act is vague in that it does not explain the standards prescribed for non-governmental and private health institutions that can provide obstetric care

Mere passage of a law holds little meaning if the regulations, that is, the guidelines for executing the provisions in the law, are not formulated. This has been the case with the Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Right Act, whose provisions are facing difficulty in their implementation even a year after its endorsement by the Parliament for want of related regulations. In the absence of the regulations, many women are unable to enjoy their rights and seek compensation when their reproductive health rights are violated. Due to the delay in formulating the regulations, health institutions have no option but to keep working as per the old act. The law, among others, has given women the right to decide on when and how many children to have, and also the requirement of her consent on a prescribed format of a health institution should she want a safe abortion.

Almost daily, the Reproductive Health Services clinic in Montgomery, Alabama, receives several versions of the same call: “Are y’all still doing abortions? Have they outlawed it in Alabama? Where can I go?”

The confusion is understandable. In May, Gov. Kay Ivey signed into law the Alabama Human Life Protection Act, which aimed to outlaw abortions in all cases except when the mother’s life was at risk. The passage of the strictest anti-abortion measure in the country made national news.

When North Dakota passed its “abortion reversal” law, Tammi Kromenaker geared up for a fight.

This March, North Dakota joined a swell of states requiring doctors to tell patients that they can reverse medical abortions. The bill is based on a contested study that the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecology (ACOG) said doesn’t meet scientific standards.

Supporters are also encouraged to add their name to a national petition calling for an end to the abortion bans. Planned Parenthood is aiming for a goal of 500,000 signatures by the anniversary of Roe v. Wade in January 2020.

Other musicians who have signed the campaign include Bon Iver, the 1975, Nicki Minaj, Fiona Apple, HAIM, Troye Sivan, Megan Thee Stallion, Miley Cyrus, and Kacey Musgraves. See all the names in the ad below.

Death and the abortion doctor: The story of Dr. W.H. Dudley
This edition of Remember This is the first of three stories recounting the status of abortion in the 1920, and the downfall of a prominent local doctor

Aug 25, 2019

From the archives of the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library:

In 1928, doctors were called to a local hotel to find a woman – the wife of the owner – dead. And with that was launched an inquest into the nature of her death, and the activities of Doctor William Howard Dudley, who had been treating her prior to her death.

The woman’s autopsy revealed a perforated uterus and indicated that she had died of peritonitis, an infection of the abdomen’s inner wall. As a result of these findings and witness testimony, Doctor William Howard Dudley was arrested. His bail was set at $10,000 – over $145,000 by today’s standards – and he was charged with manslaughter in the woman’s death.
