There are 22 days to go before the roll-out of abortion services on January 1. It should be a historic occasion when the overwhelming support shown by Irish voters for a woman's right to choose becomes reality.

But as the deadline looms, disquiet among some doctors that it is ambitious to the point of being unsafe has grown louder.

The number of people seeking abortion services in Irish hospitals once they are introduced is "not going to be huge," according to the clinical adviser to the HSE's National Women and Infants Programme.

Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Sean O'Rourke, Dr Peter Boylan said he understood medical colleagues had "genuine concerns" about the introduction of such services, but said he felt "they are more around the area of change".

As I cycle to work foetuses look down at me from posters high up on the lampposts. They are as big as new-born babies. They tell me that their hearts are beating. They tell me that they can kick and yawn. They ask me to protect them. Their words are meant to hit you where it hurts most – in your heart.

The foetuses on the posters have no mothers. They are advanced for their age. They have grown-up thoughts. They choose their words carefully. They know how to get your attention. They know how to make you feel bad. I cycle on.
