Abortion ultrasounds may be contracted

The option of contracting commercial scanning clinics to provide an ultrasound service to women seeking an abortion, under proposed new legislation, is being considered.
However, doctors have queried how they will source the required expertise, given that there is a shortage of sonographers.
Draft abortion law 'could face freedom of conscience case'

A leading member of the Medico-Legal Alliance has hinted that the country's draft abortion law may face a legal challenge similar to the Asher's Bakery freedom of conscience case.
Senior Counsel Ben Ó Floinn said it would be regrettable if such a challenge became necessary in order to secure a wide-ranging freedom of conscience for doctors who will not provide terminations.

Women between nine and 12 weeks pregnant seeking an abortion may be referred to a consultant obstetrician, Minister for Health Simon Harris has indicated.
Mr Harris was introducing the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill, which gives effect to the outcome of the abortion referendum when 66 per cent of voters supported abortion. He said TDs were making history in bringing the legislation forward to allow for abortion services in Ireland and repealing the Eighth Amendment after 35 years in the Constitution.
Three day wait for medical abortion is set out in new law

The controversial “three day” rule which will apply to women seeking a medical abortion up to twelve weeks of pregnancy is included in new legislation published today.
The clause is part of the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill which comes before the Dáil this week and aims to extend the grounds for abortion following the repeal of the Eighth Amendment.
Legislation providing for abortion approved by Cabinet

The Government has approved the text of the Health Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy Bill.
It is the legislation that will give effect to the result of the Referendum on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution held earlier this year.
The bill will be introduced and debated in the Dáil next week.

The Government has published the proposed legislation to regulate abortion services to be introduced following the recent referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment.
The heads of the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill was published on Tuesday evening, unveiling a number of minor amendments to the proposed general scheme that was published before the vote on May 25th.
