Seven News and Sunrise have repeated a false claim that pro-choice activists campaigning in favour of the New South Wales abortion legislation chanted “put the foetus in the bin” as supporters and opponents of the bill clashed in Sydney on Saturday.

The actual words were “put the bigots in the bin”, but Sunrise co-hosts David Koch and Samantha Armytage allowed Barnaby Joyce to repeat the claim unchallenged on Monday morning in a live interview on the program.

'Compassion' plea in abortion bill debate

A NSW upper house committee has under a week to report its findings from an inquiry examining a bill to decriminalise abortion in the state.

The parliamentary committee held hearings in Sydney on Wednesday and Thursday before the bill is sent to the Legislative Council where it's due to be debated next week.

Abortion law change expected from Queensland Law Reform Commission review

A highly anticipated Queensland Law Reform Commission (LRC) report examining whether abortion should be decriminalised will be handed to the State Government by tomorrow, amid strong expectations within the ALP that change will come.

Under laws written in 1899, abortion is still a criminal offence in Queensland.

The State Government charged the LRC with investigating ways to modernise abortion laws and requested it include draft legislation based on its recommendations.

An evangelical group has ramped up demonstrations outside several Brisbane abortion clinics as Queensland prepares to reform its 1899 laws that make abortion a criminal offence.

Guardian Australia is aware of several recent verbal clashes between members of the anti-abortion group “Project 139” and clinic patients. The group has sought and received permits to conduct protests at four Brisbane clinics until at least August.
