Thousands of anti-abortion activists have taken to the streets across the country to protest against a new bill to legalize abortion. The bill is backed by President Alberto Fernandez.

Thousands of people have held demonstrations across Argentina against a new government-backed bill to legalize abortion.

Protesters were seen taking to the streets on
Saturday with Argentine flags and sky-blue scarves which identify the anti-abortionists.
They also carried signs with slogans like "Save Both Lives!" and
"March for the Unborn."

Last week’s vote in Argentina’s Senate — which struck down the chance to legalize abortion — was a disappointment for millions of Argentinians and reproductive rights advocates around the world.

But it was also an outcome that is not easily explained away. As we saw in Chile, my native Ireland and Argentina, many Catholic majority countries are opening up about their faith, the ethics of choice and what it means to trust women like never before. Argentina’s unprecedented debate has emboldened a movement for women’s equality and dignity in the country, and the hemisphere, that is unstoppable.

Today’s the day: a matter of life and death for women

It’s the 8th of August, 10am, the day the vote will be taken on the bill that was passed by the House of Deputies several months and thousands of words and actions in support of law reform ago. Our friends in the country told us on the 1st of August that the debate in the Senate over the past days and weeks has been far more aggressive and extreme, mostly because anti-abortion activists are more active and preparing to go to court if the bill is approved. Some are pushing for the rejection of the bill altogether. Others have proposed a number of amendments.

An article on ABC News on 1 August, reporting on the response of the medical profession to the bill, quoted Health Minister Adolfo Rubinstein as saying recently. "Beyond all the moral dilemmas, abortion exists and it's a problem that we must face." They also reported that the prestigious Argentina Medical Society have endorsed the bill “because it will reduce deaths among the estimated 400,000–500,000 women who now have clandestine abortions each year”.

The photos above are of a few of the Deputies in the Argentinian Congress supporting safe, legal, free abortion in the day-long marathon debate on 13 June, with the green scarves of the movement around their necks and on their desks.

The debate started at 11:30am on 13 June, and at that point several of the undecided deputies announced their positions, but it was not yet clear who had the majority of votes. Just after midnight, El Comercio reported that of the 275 deputies, 124 were thought to be against the bill and 126 in favour. Importantly, the report notes, the deputies’ positions for or against the bill, from the first day, were independent of their political affiliations. The bill needs 129 votes of the 257 total to be approved.
