Minister for Health Simon Harris has said he cannot guarantee that legislation allowing for abortion would be passed by the current Government in the event the Eighth Amendment is repealed.

A referendum on repealing Article 40.3.3, also known as the Eighth Amendment, is to take place on May 25th. The Amendment gives an equal right to life to the mother and the unborn.

The chair of the Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment has revealed the committee could not find a single medical expert in Ireland to argue the case for the status quo.

Senator Catherine Noone said the committee secretariat and the membership had been asked to put forward experts who would put the medical case for retaining the Eighth Amendment.

Pro-choice politicians are starting a campaign to convince Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Sinn Féin to back a law legalising abortion in Ireland.

Repealing the Eighth Amendment, to allow abortion up to 12 weeks into a pregnancy and lifting sanctions from doctors and women was formally recommended to the government in a report published by an Oireachtas committee yesterday.

The Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment has concluded Article 40.3.3 should be removed from the Constitution and politicians should be allowed to legislate for abortion.

After three months of evidence and a series of votes, the committee stated the current regime for the termination of pregnancy is unfit for purpose and that constitutional reform is necessary.

The chairman of a cross-party committee which called for the constitutional ban on abortion to be repealed has warned about misinformation and opportunism in the referendum debate.

The Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment found Article 40.3.3, which gives the mother and unborn child equal right to life, is not fit for purpose.

Senator Catherine Noone said the referendum on the proposed repeal, expected in May next year, would lead to an open season for campaigners.
