Anti-abortion activist told he risks prison if site is not taken down

An anti-abortion activist has been warned he could end up in jail if he does not comply with a court order to take down a website with a similar name to the HSE's 'My Options' unplanned pregnancy advice service.

The HSE secured the High Court order against Eamonn Murphy after alleging his website was misleading members of the public into thinking it provided objective counselling and information services.

Next week will mark one month since the introduction of general abortion services for the first time in the history of the Irish State. In the final weeks of 2018, there were dire warnings from senior medics and family doctors that the January 1st deadline was being “rushed” and was “dangerously unrealistic”.

Only nine maternity hospitals were ready to provide full access to abortion care, with the remaining 10 expected to come on board shortly. Some 240 general practitioners have now signed up to the service. Despite the less than comprehensive level of access, abortions are now happening across the country in hospitals and in general practices.

There has been a further decrease in the number of women giving Irish addresses at abortion clinics in England and Wales, according to figures issued by the UK Department of Health.

The latest statistics show the number of women has fallen from 3,265 in 2016 to 3,091 in 2017. This equates to a decrease in the rate of women travelling to the UK for an abortion from 3.5 per 1,000 women in 2016 to 3.1 per 1,000 in 2017.
