Obstetricians and gynaecologists have agreed to establish principles of safe practice that will “underpin safe care for women” in the event of the repeal of the Eighth Amendment to the constitution in next month’s referendum.

The Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists held an extraordinary general meeting on Friday.

There are significant dangers to the unsupervised use of abortion pills, the Minister for Health Simon Harris and the chair of the Institute of Obstetricians Peter Boylan warned yesterday while calling for a Yes vote in the abortion.

The widespread use of “illegal” and “unsupervised” abortion pills present a compelling case for repealing the eighth amendment and legalising the pills so they can be used under medical supervision, the men said.

It has been a momentous week for campaigners on both sides of the great abortion debate as it was finally confirmed that a referendum would be held this summer. Friday, May 25, is thought to be the most likely day for the referendum, one that pro-choice supporters hope will forever lift the ban on abortion.

But despite a series of opinion polls that indicate that the majority of the country wants change, the pro-life side believes a large cohort of people opposed to abortion have not had their voices heard.

Friends in Galway of Savita Halappanavar have described comments by Senator Ronan Mullen on the circumstances in which she died as “very sad”, “rude” and “ridiculous”.

Sreeni Rao, whose wife Mrdula was Ms Halappanavar’s closest friend in Ireland and who visited her in Galway University Hospital during her last week, said he could not understand the comments.

Health minister 'sickened' over claims by Dublin pregnancy counselling centre

An undercover reporter was told: "You will be at breast cancer risk"

Minister for Health Simon Harris has said he feels "a bit sickened" about information being given out at an Irish pregnancy counselling centre.

Mr Harris was responding to footage showing a Dublin-based centre advising an undercover reporter that terminations can lead to breast cancer, and turn a woman into a child abuser.

He said he would consider introducing regulations to ensure women are provided with factual information about their reproductive choices.
