The woman stumbled into a public hospital late one night, her stomach turning as she approached the lobby. She was bleeding.

Dr. Damian Levy ushered her into a room. Like many of his patients at Hospital Alvarez in Buenos Aires, she was young and poor. At first, she refused to tell him why she was there.

Then she burst into a tearful confession. She had tried to perform her own abortion at home and used 40 tablets of the drug misoprostol — nearly three times the suggested dosage for inducing a miscarriage. She was worried that the hospital would report her to police.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has dismissed a man's petition seeking damages from his estranged wife for undergoing abortion without his consent, and ruled that an adult woman had an unimpeachable right to give birth or terminate pregnancy.

Terming the abortion, to which he had objected, "illegal", the husband had also demanded compensation from the woman's parents and brother, and two doctors. The Punjab and Haryana high court had dismissed the husband's plea saying termination of pregnancy was the sole prerogative of the woman .

The government has confirmed that it is to award a quarter of a million pounds from an unpopular levy on women’s sanitary products to an anti-abortion organisation, despite objections from women’s groups and MPs.

There was a outcry earlier this year after the Observer revealed that £250,000 of the money raised from the so-called tampon tax – the 5% rate of VAT that is levied on sanitary products –would go to Life, a charity that campaigns against abortion.

Slow march to reduce unsafe abortion

Living in a grass-thatched hut near Mponela in Dowa, Magret Kawala knows why rural women will keep dying of backstreet abortions unless laws are relaxed.

The village heads, who reigns over almost 50 households and 250 people, counts herself “lucky to be still alive” having survived deadly complications of clandestine abortion eight years ago.

“My lastborn was only two months old when I started vomiting and feeling dizzy. I couldn’t eat. I went for checkups and a nurse confirmed that I was pregnant. I felt bad. The baby was still lactating. I didn’t know what to do really,” she recalls.

UK: Why David Steel’s Abortion Act means so much to me – a reflection on its 50th Anniversary

Why David Steel’s Abortion Act means so much to me – a reflection on its 50th Anniversary
By Caroline Macdonald

Today is an important day. We, as Liberals, need to remember that 50 years ago, on this day, the Abortion Act came into being.

Why is this important? I know many people, especially disabled people, feel a real conflict about this legislation. There are issues to consider here, not least with regard to the concept of gender selective abortion and I would urge people to look at MP voting records on this important topic.

The hypocrisy surrounding Northern Ireland’s abortion ban shames us all

The hypocrisy surrounding Northern Ireland’s abortion ban shames us all

This week the 1967 Abortion Act marked its fiftieth anniversary. While women in England, Scotland and Wales reflect on fifty years of reproductive rights, women in Northern Ireland have no reason for celebration.

Instead, women from Northern Ireland were in the Supreme Court this week, as judges heard a case on whether our abortion laws amount to a breach of human rights law.

Graphic images of abortion offend the public and do campaigners no favours

Graphic images of abortion offend the public and do campaigners no favours
Zealots' shocking pictures are crude, disturbing and morally wrong, says Fionola Meredith

October 27 2017

For years, I avoided driving my little girl home from primary school along University Street in South Belfast, where the Family Planning Association (FPA) used to have its offices. I didn't want her to see the images of aborted foetuses festooned in the trees that line the road, placed there by anti-abortion campaigners holding their regular 'prayer vigils' outside the FPA.

But these days it's increasingly hard to escape such images. Following similar stunts in the United States and Canada, anti-abortion campaigners have now hit on the idea of blowing the pictures up to a massive size and driving them around on the backs of trucks.
