Masters of maternity hospitals express 'major concerns' over online abortion pills

The Masters of two of Ireland's main maternity hospitals have said they have "major concerns" about women procuring abortion pills online to terminate their pregnancies.

Speaking at a joint press conference to call for a 'Yes' vote in Friday's referendum, Dr Rhona Mahony of the National Maternity Hospital in Holles Street and Professor Fergal Malone of the Rotunda Hospital expressed concerns about the health implications for women who take abortion pills.

LAST NIGHT, THE first televised debate on the referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment took place on The Late Late Show.

Dr. Peter Boylan, the former Master of the National Maternity Hospital in Holles Street was representing the ‘Yes’ side, with the support of general practitioner Dr. Mary Favier.

On the ‘No’ side, were broadcaster Wendy Grace and Love Both spokeswoman Caroline Simons.

Speaking at the unveiling of the Pro Life Campaign’s “Love Both” campaign during the week, spokeswoman Caroline Simons said: “Voters who support abortion in limited circumstances need to know that what they hope for with repeal and what they get are two entirely different things.”

What astounding arrogance. Simons has decided that those who will vote for the removal of the amendment have no independence of mind and are naive, delusional dupes who will vote next month unaware of the reality of what they are doing and devoid of a capacity for love. She has also decided what they hope for.

The Government is set to find out that the Irish people “cannot be fooled” into believing that repealing the Eighth Amendment will allow anything other than abortion on demand, an anti-abortion rally has heard in Cork.

Legal consultant to the Pro Life Campaign, Caroline Simons said Minister for Health Simon Harris was seeking to present the proposal to allow abortion up to 12 weeks in all cases as somehow being restrictive.

Last November, a group of 15 to 20 people who have pressed for changes to Ireland’s abortion laws for decades sat in the headquarters of the National Women’s Council of Ireland in Smithfield to listen to a research briefing.

One of the key messages for the forthcoming campaign, according to sources, was that “some change is better than no change”, and that they must be willingness to settle for less than some of them have long wanted.
