Seven months and nine days ago, 1.4 million people in Ireland voted to remove its anti-abortion laws.

What (Taoiseach) Irish PM Leo Varadkar called a "quiet revolution", had culminated with a day when the Eighth Amendment was repealed.

Irish Health Minister Simon Harris hailed the passing of the legislation as a "new era for Irish women".

The first consultations for women seeking an abortion have taken place since the service became legal on January 1st.

GPs, who have opted in to providing terminations, say they are aware of about 20 women from across the country who sought terminations on the first working day of the service on Wednesday.

Ireland is poised to roll out its first regular abortion services in the coming weeks in the wake of the referendum vote to lift the country’s near-total ban on abortion.

Politicians and officials fast-tracked legislation and logistical preparations to turn last year’s landslide vote in favour of liberalisation into reality for women who wish to terminate pregnancies.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar was one of many public figures who on Tuesday welcomed the introduction of legal abortion services in Ireland.

Mr Varadkar said January 1st, 2019, would be marked as the day in which “abortion services become legally available in Ireland”.

As of Tuesday it is again legal for women in Ireland to seek to terminate their pregnancies following last year's referendum.

Ireland has introduced its first abortion services today following a 2018 referendum decision to liberalise the country's ban on terminating pregnancies.

Laws were quickly passed following the referendum to ensure that as of midnight on Tuesday, the country's national health service was able to offer terminations free of charge.

Abortion services have been introduced in the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday following a landslide vote in favour of liberalising the country’s laws.

As of midnight terminations have become available free of charge, GPs and family planning services as well as hospitals across the country.

The HSE has launched a website with information on abortion services in Ireland.

It comes after President Michael D Higgins signed the legislation to allow for abortion services in Ireland to be put into law on Thursday.

The myoptions.ie section of the HSE website details information on how to get an abortion, abortion methods, aftercare and the possible risks involved.

The Irish College of General Practitioners has issued family doctors with interim clinical guidelines, for doctors who wish to provide termination of pregnancy services once it is legalised.

It said that GPs must have access to an ultrasound facility, if a query about the gestation period, or complications arise.

More than 2,500 women may seek a medical abortion from a GP or maternity hospital next year.

The figure is based on the number of early terminations recorded by UK clinics last year among women who travelled from the Republic of Ireland.
