The Only Honest Right Wing Pundit Is a Violent One

Personally, I am glad that female staffers who have had abortions at the Atlantic will not have to sit next to a man who wants them dead. But philosophically, the recent firing of Kevin D. Williamson says more about liberals’ inability to face the truth about their own country than one man’s lack of empathy for women.

Amid uproar over the announcement that Williamson had been hired as the Atlantic’s new staff writer, editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg wrote in a memo that his publication should be a “big tent for ideas and argument” and “ideologically diverse...We have to host people who actually disagree with, and sometimes offend, the other side.” But then Goldberg was faced with that pesky 2014 podcast, dug up by Media Matters, that made it hard to dismiss his new employee’s ideology as just an “objectionable tweet.” Like those tweets, Williamson’s podcast argument took anti-abortion talking points out of theoretical debate-land and instead to their tangible, logical conclusion.

Abortion Clinics Report Threats of Violence on the Rise

A new report finds that anti-abortion violence last year was higher than it's been in 20 years — and now that newly confirmed conservative Republican Attorney General Jeff Sessions will oversee law enforcement initiatives that protect an providers from harm, many advocates are on edge.

According to the 2016 National Clinic Violence Survey published last Thursday by the Feminist Majority Foundation, 34.2 percent of U.S. abortion providers reported "severe violence or threats of violence" in the first half of 2016.

That number is up from 19.7 percent in 2014 — and before that, the highest recent peak came in 1995, with an average of 24 percent.

US: Man who killed abortion doctor gets more lenient sentence

WICHITA, Kan. – The man who seven years ago ambushed and fatally shot one of the few U.S. doctors performing late-term abortions was given a more lenient sentence Wednesday of at least 25 years in prison before becoming eligible for parole.

At a surprise resentencing hearing, prosecutors withdrew their request that Scott Roeder serve at least 50 years before parole eligibility. Roeder also was sentenced to an additional two years for aggravated assault for threatening two church ushers as he fled.

Every few months, I do an Internet search for my name, as recommended by a media-savvy colleague. In the past I’ve found myself in all the predictable places — among a list of doctors who graduated from my residency program, on my employer’s Web site, in various social-media posts. But in the stillness of a warm evening this past August, after putting my daughter to bed, I found myself in a new and terrifying place: an anti-choice Web site that claims I am part of an “abortion cartel.” In addition to my office address and links to find my medical license numbers, it features several photos of me. In one of the photos, taken from social media, I’m holding my then-15-month-old daughter.

Though the site claims to be “informational” in nature, the real purpose is clear. There is no better way to intimidate and incite fear than to target a family member, especially a child. The message is unambiguous: I’m being watched, and so is my daughter.

Sitting on the couch in the living room of her Colorado home, a woman we’ll call Karen leafs through a small notebook as she gathers her thoughts. Her legs are curled up around her — her feet bare, toenails painted blue. She pauses on one page. At the top, she’s written the letters PTSD in all caps. The letters have been traced over and over again in ballpoint pen, leaving thick, dark creases in the paper. At the bottom is a doodle of flowers growing upward.

For most of the time that she and her husband have lived in their 100-year-old Craftsman house in a small mountain town, she never locked the front door. She would sometimes even leave it wide open when she was home. “I was always more afraid of a bear coming into the house than a human,” she jokes.

But that has changed. A reporter from the New York Times once knocked on her door, and she was terrified. If he can find me, anyone can, she thought. We should get more locks.
