Canada – Nope, Erin O’Toole is still not pro-choice

The abortion issue is still the "stinking albatross" around the neck of the Conservative Party leader, because about 81 per cent of Conservative incumbents running in the federal election have been designated as anti-choice by the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada. That includes the party leader himself, Erin O'Toole.

As I wrote one year ago, Erin O'Toole is not pro-choice. In 2016, he voted in favour of private member Bill C-225 that would have given legal personhood to fetuses, in the context of pregnant people being attacked.

The Trump administration can deny critical federal funding to Planned Parenthood and other family planning organizations that also provide abortions or referrals for them, a federal court ruled Thursday.

Abortion rights advocates fear that could mean thousands of low-income Americans will lose access to reproductive health care, and already, Planned Parenthood has said it plans to fight the ruling. Abortion rights groups can also still challenge the ruling in other circuit courts.

A federal appeals court decided unanimously Thursday to lift three injunctions that barred the Trump administration from denying funds to family planning clinics that refer clients for abortions.

The decision by a three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals was a significant setback for Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers.

Women seeking legal abortion care including life-threatening complications due to abortion (post-abortion complication) or after suffering miscarriage may be denied care by some health service providers in Ghana due to their religious or moral beliefs, a research finding has revealed.

According to the study, which looked at Conscience-based Objection to abortion care or Conscientious Objection to abortion (CO) conducted in two regions in Ghana Volta and Eastern Regions by reproductive rights advocacy network, Global Doctors for Choice Ghana, a relatively high number of doctors, midwives, nurses and physician assistants who have received training in comprehensive abortion care will rather exercise their right to refuse to provide legal abortion services to women in need due to their religious or morale beliefs.

A survey has found that respondents were split on whether doctors opposed to abortion should be obliged to refer a patient to another doctor who will carry out the procedure.

The poll of 1,000 adults was carried out by Amárach on behalf of The Pro Life Campaign, which is holding its National Conference today.

The Department of Health is to meet medical colleges including the Irish College of General Practitioners, the Royal College of Physicians, and the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists to discuss clinical protocols to deliver an abortion service, a spokeswoman for the Irish Medical Organisation has said. It is the largest medical representative body and trade union in Ireland.

It was “important that medical professionals can, on a conscientious basis, choose not to deliver this service,” she said.

Doctors in Ireland could be allowed refer women to the UK for abortions in the coming months ahead of planned new services here in January, Minister for Health Simon Harris has signalled.

The abortion referendum Bill is expected to be signed by President Michael D Higgins next week following a ruling on Friday by the Supreme Court blocking any further legal challenges to last May’s referendum result.

The chairperson of the Termination for Medical Reasons group has welcomed a decision by the Minister for Health to allow doctors to refer women who have pregnancies, where there is a diagnosis of a life-limiting condition, for an abortion abroad before the end of this year.

In a statement to RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Simon Harris said he wants to allow certain parts of the legislation to come into effect in advance of services beginning in January.

Catholic hospitals could break the law and refuse to offer abortions in all circumstances, a “code of ethics” drafted by the Irish Catholic Bishops suggests. Guidelines for up to 20 main hospitals connected with religious orders include a ban on most assisted reproduction procedures. The few allowed are not to be given to unmarried women or LGBT couples.

The Code of Ethical Standards for Healthcare, which sets out what can be expected from Catholic healthcare services, bans contraception; gender reassignment surgery for transgender people, crisis pregnancy counselling with information on abortion and counselling for families going through a fatal foetal abnormality diagnosis that lists termination as an option.
