Queensland abortion legalisation to be put to conscience vote
Legislation decriminalising abortion expected to pass parliament after Liberal National party lets MPs choose

Queensland is expected to pass legislation to decriminalise abortion next week, after the opposition Liberal National party decided to allow its MPs a conscience vote.

The decision, announced after a lengthy party room meeting on Tuesday afternoon, will pave the way for the removal of abortion from the 1899 criminal code.

Queensland Labor’s ambitious bid to decriminalise abortion and ban protesters targeting pregnant women outside clinics could be thwarted at a meeting of Liberal National MPs today.

Although the government commands 48 of parliament’s 93 seats, some Labor MPs are ­expected to abstain or vote against the bill, which would allow terminations on request up to 22 weeks’ gestation.

Politicians should be able to exercise their conscience when voting on whether to reform the state's "archaic" abortion laws, a parliamentary committee says.

However, two opposition MPs were scathing of the committee's decision to delve into the issue of conscience votes, arguing it was a party decision and anyone who needed help to understand the concept could look it up in the Oxford dictionary.

A woman from a north Brisbane Catholic school, who recently underwent an abortion, says the Church "overstepped its bounds" with a “highly misleading” newsletter about the state’s new abortion laws.

She claimed the letter from the Brisbane Archdiocese contained information and content that could “push vulnerable women to end their life”.

Andrew Little today fired the starting gun on reforming New Zealand's decades-old abortion laws, confirming that he had sent a draft referral to the two other governing parties for their comment. Thomas Coughlan reports on what to expect from the law change.

Andrew Little surprised observers today when he revealed that a draft referral on reforming New Zealand's abortion law had been circulated to New Zealand First and the Greens. Little said today that he received a letter from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern after the coalition was formed directing him to begin the process of reforming the law. Once the two parties give feedback, the referral will be sent to the Law Commission to make a recommendation.

Sinn Féin TDs will not be allowed a conscience vote on abortion and anyone who deviates from the party line will be disciplined, the party’s new leader Mary Lou McDonald has said.

“It’s a matter of private conscience but it’s also a matter of public policy,” Ms McDonald told RTÉ’s The Week in Politics on Sunday.
